Brisbane, as predicted, has started to see a turn toward commercial developments with DAs lodged for proposed office buildings on Albert Street, in Fortitude Valley, and Upper Mount Gravatt.

Of note, the Albert Street DA will see the demolition of the existing Suncorp Plaza tower. Well known for the clock that sits atop the building and its unique north-south orientation that places it on an angle to the city grid, the structure is less known for being Brisbane’s first high rise, and at the time the only structural steel framed high rise building in the city.

Standing at 118 metres, the building heralded a new era in the Brisbane CBD with other known high rises soon following including the National Bank House in 1976 (104 metres), AMP Place or the ‘gold tower’ in 1977 (135 metres), and Comalco House or the ‘blue tower’ in 1983 (134 metres).

So while we all look forward to seeing the proposed 343 Albert Street building unfold skyward, it’s also an important time to recognise the ingenuity and forward thinking of the developers, architects, engineers and builders that have shaped our skyline to date.
